Project Uncovered: The City of London
A massive control network encompassing 15,000 luminaires has helped turn the City of London into a ‘smart city’. As well as lighting control, including dimming, the system supports applications such as traffic and parking monitoring, occupancy sensing, environmental monitoring and asset management. Based on Wi-SUN’s self-forming and self-healing mesh, the scheme has led to a 60 per cent reduction in energy use and generates pollution, air quality and traffic data thanks to embedded sensors. Here Giles Radford, highways manager at the City of London, explains the project and its achievements.
